Yeah Jon: I dont think this is anything new, except the hype.
Crosley made an attempt at a Sportscar in the 50s called the "HotShot"
that used a water injection system. They ran a 10 or 10.5
compression, and used the water to control detonation, or something
like that. I think they also said to add alchol to the mixture..
Oldsmobile had something similar on their small supercharged F85,
during the same era, I think..
Wasn't something similar on the P-38 Lightning's turbochargers during
WW-2 ?

Jack,

A long time ago I tried these remedies on a 1979 Ford 460 engine. Even built a fuel pre-heater to atomize gasoline; along with water injection...the 460 got better HP/MPG, and no "ping"; pulled the trailer beyond belief. Not sure what this was doing to the engine. I abandoned the project because I was out of time. Perhaps I should dig this project out from the moth balls...might make a few bucks.

I read an article recently about someone who developed an engine
that alternated between fuel and water injection. On the first
cycles diesel was injected creating lots of heat and pushing the
piston down, on the next cycles water was injected and converted to
steam from the heat of compression and the residual heat from the
first combustion stroke. This not only took advantage of the
residual heat, it also cooled the engine so little other cooling was
required.

I believe it is still in the development stages, but it was a
pretty good design.

There are some B-52s & Kc 135s setting out in the AZ dessert that used water. The 135 used 1200gallons in about 30 seconds. It was used to pack more air into the inlet. Here is magic number to remember 14.7 to 1 that is the ideal air to fuel ratio so if this thing sprayed the air with water with air will be heaver therefore using less fuel to get bac to the 14.7:1
