Adding Satellite dish
For info, I have in motion satellite with DISH service in the home and bus as a package deal. Have had it for 4 years in two states of residence. More channels than I will ever watch, Sirius radio, local TV stations, and ESPN Game Plan. It works well.

Don,

I didn't quite understand the part about Direct TV. Was it the part

about Hi-Def. or that it wouldn't work with the in motion unit.

I had Dish Net in the house and when I tried to get it in the coach

they said no way Jose. I asked Direct for in motion service for the

coach and they answered no problem, then gave me a better deal than

Dish for the house, shop, and coach. $98.00 for 180 channels + 50

movie channels, XM and a bunch of other stuff I never watch or listen

to. I can't tell the difference in reception from base station dish,

house and shop or in-motion,coach, they both work great.

Because with satellite, dish size is important, and in-motion have

the smallest dishes of them all. However, if reception while under-

way is an important criteria the compromise may be worth it.

Adding Satellite dish
My reference was to High Def, where DirecTV has moved to satellites that are not
compatible with in-motion dishes.

As far as DirecTV or Dish mobile, running into a DTV or Dish rep that knows
anything about mobile is very unusual. The "normal" way is to simply not tell
them, since it doesn't matter, although Dish does now have a $5 per month charge
on their DVRs if they are not hooked up to a phone line.

There are a variety of nuances, such as obtaining "Distant Network" stations,
which those of us who travel a lot like. With DTV you just fill in the waiver
form and mail it in with a copy of your RV registration. Dish used to not allow
similar, but played too loose and are now prohibited from providing national
networks; there is, however an affiliated company that can provide that service.
DTV stations are New York and LA, and the third-party company for Dish uses
Atlanta and San Francisco.

Adding Satellite dish
I would like to add this since I know it is correct and applies to me and at least one other RV full timer I know. My friend who has a Chicago address and uses DISH receives Chicago local national channels in DeFuniak Springs, FL during the winter. I receive Atlanta anywhere I go presumably because that is my home local channels. I do no know technically why and really will not spend trying to figure it out.I think it has to do with spot beams.???? Before DISH got into a BrooHaHA with broadcasting national channels I used to get NY and LA.
Don's statement about finding a DTv or DISH tech who knows anything about in motion is correct and is very rare. They are all sub contractors. These guys do not know what a bus is. The first obstacal is to convince them that the bus moves. My account is set up as A and B. A for
stationary(home) and B mobile on the bus, and even then I sometimes have to call them and have them send a signal to my smart card in the coach. Not always though. One would think in this electronic chain world once its fixed it would stay fixed.

As a side story, I was tired of messing with DISH two years ago so I called DTv. I explained what I was going to do, gave them detailed information and antenna type and they said no problem. When the tech arrived to set up the bus he had a fixed antenna on board. I did not need an antenna of course, so I sent him packing. I stayed with DISH. Six one way, half dosen the other. Neither company has any sense if you ask me. They just sell TV service. Service is quite another matter.

The "locals" thing is a separate can of worms. At least in theory, you can't
receive both locals and "distant" national networks at the same time, but I do
know people with DTV who have fallen through the cracks, and it used to be
common with Dish before they lost the "Distant" capability.

In order to provide "Distant" the channels have to be on national beams, while
every other local is on a spot beam (some of the spots are many hundreds of
miles wide).

So, someone with LA or NY locals with DirecTV will receive those locals
everywhere without applying for "Distant" status. Dish used 5 locals for
nationwide beams - Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Denver, and LA. Some of those may
have been dropped back to spot beams now that they can't offer nationwide, and
the others may drop back in the future. The reason for dropping the national
would be because they can use the bandwidth for additional locals.

So, Leroy, both you and your friend may one day be out of your area and suddenly
find that your home stations no longer arrive. There will be no notice, because
technically they have no customers in those out-of-market locations. Smile

Adding Satellite dish
Thanks for the explanation Don. It is good to understand how some of the business works. In my case there are no TV or radio stations within 50 miles. There is no cable nearby either. My internet is over the telephone line. I rarely watch Atlanta TV, generally for football because the news has no bearing on where I live. Nothing has any bearing on where I live unless a tornado blows through. As long as I have Game Plan in football season I will be good unless a storm knocks it off line. I need corn for the deer. I really do not need local channels or national spot beams anyway. The most important channel broadcast is Sponge Bob Square Pants. A crabby burger and Squidword keep things quiet around here. lol

The "locals" thing is a separate can of worms. At least in theory, you can't receive both locals and "distant" national networks at the same time, but I do know people with DTV who have fallen through the cracks, and it used to be common with Dish before they lost the "Distant" capability.

In order to provide "Distant" the channels have to be on national beams, while every other local is on a spot beam (some of the spots are many hundreds of miles wide).

So, someone with LA or NY locals with DirecTV will receive those locals everywhere without applying for "Distant" status. Dish used 5 locals for nationwide beams - Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Denver, and LA. Some of those may have been dropped back to spot beams now that they can't offer nationwide, and the others may drop back in the future. The reason for dropping the national would be because they can use the bandwidth for additional locals.

So, Leroy, both you and your friend may one day be out of your area and suddenly find that your home stations no longer arrive. There will be no notice, because technically they have no customers in those out-of-market locations. Smile
