window frames

Hi,

Needing help with peeling on frame around 2 windows on BB. Has anyone dealt with these issues and if so, may I ask what process you used? We are new to the forum

and in the process of redoing our interior. Dh thinks we should take them off(window frames) and have a paint shop paint them.. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also on the 1993 there is a BB logo indentation on the door, was there originally some sort of decal there? It looks as though there might have been.

Welcome to the forum.

All of the windows that I have seen on BB are made out of aluminum. I have been
told that BB made the windows in the mid 90's coaches. (Maybe even earlier
years???) All the finishes I have seen on the outside of the window frame have
been an anodized finish. The fact that you mentioned that something was peeling
makes me think that someone may have painted those frames. Anodizing doesn't
peel as far as I know. Anodizing is an oxidizing process that forms a layer of
"rust" on the surface. It's possible that the anodizing is wearing off but this
doesn't occur as peeling so far as I know. There is a rubber seal that goes
around the window. I doubt if that is peeling.

I can't comment on a BB logo on your door. Honestly, I don't recall seeing a
logo on the doors.

One suggestion that has been one of the protocols of this forum: It is helpful
if, when you sign your name, you put the year and the model of your Bluebird.

The exterior frame on one window (bedroom) showed the dark finish peeling or flaking off in a few patches, leaving a dull aluminum color underneath. So, if the window frames were anodized, that one wasn't. Since a brief inspection showed that there was no real degradation to the window structure, dealing with the issue was far, far down on my "things to do something about" list...

I had the understanding that the mid-90s coaches used Hehr brand windows (in, at least, some of the positions). The Hehr maintenance manual appears to describe many of the features of the windows in my coach, including an explanation why they would squeak and the procedure to cure the problem.

If the original poster was referring to the Bluebird logo on the -inside- of the door, AFAIK, that was simply a carved (or pressed) decoration that did not have any further embellishment. (I suggest "pressed" because the wood used on the inside door is a particle board-type product that may have been custom crafted for BB.)

If there appears to have been an effort to paint the bird image or the background, that might have been done by a prior owner.

It is not the windows themselves I believe she refers to. There is a wooden
frame aroung the door and driver's window sets that get moisture through the
glass and need to be painted from time to time. If you have a skylight, you
might have the same problem if you do not re-seal them from the outside from
time to time (guess what? Mine leaked at the Q this week and I know I hould
have performed preventive maintainance sooner).

You might want to rmove them so you can sand then down without damage to walls
aroud them. A good primer and enamel spray paint works well.

The coach is a 1993 WL WB PT.

We recently bought it.. What you said is what I was thinking of doing.

Sanding and paining them with enamel paint.. The window big on the drivers side only has a small area. The window frame on the inside of the door is the worst one. I will try to remove

the wood.. I was thinking of sanding and painting the larger window frame with it in place if possible. Then use an enamel paint after masking it off. We are previous boaters, so I'm used to doing things like this.

First, the door does have a carving or "pressed" image. It was never more than
that. Keep it subtle, no doubt.

Is your peeling on the window wood frame or on the aluminum window frame itself
?

Hi Sally,

Ahhh... so it is the wood. I figured it probably was, as did many others who
wrote you back. The wood can be sanded down and refinished. If you are having
any condensation, it will continue to add issues for the wood. We had some
HEAVY condensation issues and brought a dehumidifier and it has been pulling
about one GALLON every day. (Can you believe that?, no wonder I couldn't keep up
with squeegee-ing and drying the windows. But of course, we live in the Redwoods
right now, and it is ALWAYS WET everywhere). Our coach has dried out completely.
It was our saving grace... Our windows were all having issues because of the
uncontrollable condensation.

GOOD LUCK... you had a boat... so refinishing should be a piece of cake for
you.
