Add on air compressor
I had a small sears pancake compressor that I carried with me but it quit making
air. I am going to get a new compressor to take a with me & I was wandering if it would be ok to take the tanks off & use the compressor by itself. I have a good place to plumb it in before the air dryer. I don't like taking up the extra room for the tanks. That is how I would do it. A check valve
should be used between the compressor and your plumb-in point. Bob Griesel 84 FC31 WLII WA I had a small sears pancake compressor that I carried with me but it quit making air. I am going to get a new compressor to take a with me & I was wandering if it would be ok to take the tanks off & use the compressor by itself. I have a good place to plumb it in before the air dryer. Bob, Â Â I wouldn't need a gauge on that compressor with it working with the air governor would I ?

The gauge is useful so you know what the aux air system is doing, but it won't control the compressor. If the compressor doesn't already have one, you need a pressure switch that can be set to just below the normal bus air pressure which is probably 125PSI.

The single comment I would make is to be aware of the compressor's CFM.
Several of the modern box store cheap compressors will build plenty of PSI, but the supply CFM is so low that it might take days to air a bus tire. A friend just bought one with 0.85 CFM. It runs his brad nailer just fine but struggles airing his trailer tires to 32 PSI. You want to make sure your not pushing 200 PSI throughout the bus. That would not be a positive effect. You need to have it governed to about 120 PSI and the compressor your purchasing should have a governor on it. Sometimes they are adjustable. I would not just install it without a governor.Â

Thanks guys some good advice. I'll check the cfm on it. It is a emglo that supports 4 air nailers. It also has oil in it which my old sears didn't have it.

Yes you can use just the compressor head, while using the Bus as an air tank, But follow the previous posts and besure to have a regulator and a gage at the aux compressor, Do not exceed 120/125 PSi to the bus, When usung this Aux compressor I would monitor the gages for proper operation.
