Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
Sure sorry to hear of your problem. I also wish you didn't have to
do business with Stewart & Stevenson. In Dallas, they are the
pits. Wouldn't go there on a bet.

If you would have been up in the Metroplex, the folks to deal with
are Industrial Automatic Transmission. Best around.

toast because of the fluids effect on electronic components in the
tranny. Also must pull and fix radiator; the cost will use most of
my lunch money for next 5 years. Just goes to show, no matter how
careful you are with inspections, problems can still arise. Can
probably reclaim coach next week; did get to have a jollly ride in a
huge wrecker that would have satisfied most noise freaks.

Ron & Wallace,
I agree with Ron about S&S in Dallas, but I had really good results with
two other S&S locations - Denver and Wichita Falls. If ya'll ever need a good
factory school certified (Detroit 6V92, 8V92 or Series 60) diesel mechanic, try
Sean Stancell in Prosper, Tx. at 972-346-2577. He left S&S for a variety of
management reasons (as did their most recent service manager, Todd) and is now
working on his own.
Good luck

Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
I wonder what caused the break in the cooler line?
Since Craig's rig is a 95, I wonder if we who have older rigs should
replace the radiator to forstall any problems in the future.
What does the group think?
Right now I could afford to replace the rad. When we retire in 23
months, I don't know.

I wonder if it could have had anything to do with the way the cooling
system was maintained? I've never heard of any other bird's that had a
simliar problem. Would be interesting to examine the radiator and heat
exchanger parts. Bob 93pt

Bob, don't we have a separate radiator for our transmission fluid- just in
front of the radiator? Or is that for the hydraulic fluids? Ernie- 83pt40 in

Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
Re: Avoiding Coolant problems.

Over the years, the Rally maintenance seminars have
warned that proper coolant Ph, as measured by the
"coolant test strips;" and a thorough flush and
replace of coolant and filter(s) at a minimum of 24
months or 15,000 miles, with 16 gal H2O and 16 gal
coolant and Nitrite additive; are extremely helpful in
lowering risk of "cavitation," (if that is what "ate"
thru the core in this sad instance.)

While BB reportedly uses bulk Texaco coolant and
adds bulk additive, Detroit engine shops recommend
pre-mixed Detroit Diesel "Power Cool" which already
contains the proper amount of Nalcool, their brand of
Nitrite additive (Nalcool 2000 is for use with soft
water, and Nalcool 3000 for hard.)

As for coolant filters, there are apparently two
types available: a regular, or maintenance filter, and
a "needs-based-release," filter, which, in addition to
being a maintenance filter, contains a one-time "shot
of Power Cool" which will be automatically released,
"If Needed." (Need Release Auto Coolant Additive
Filter - Detroit part #23516489, was $64 couple years
ago when last I checked.)

Based upon personal observation of a thorough job to
drain, replace, purge air, and strip test, 2 1/2 to 3
1/2 labor-hours is not out of reason.

Report on the Craig's break down in Texas
Good morning Bob from 20f Azle. The transmission had the fancy fluid (forget
the name) and the oil was good at the time I bought the coach. Ralph passed it
on pre-buy and found it in excellent condition. Frankly, I think it was a part
failure which we will know when they replace the transmission. By the bye, I
have confirmed with others that the only solution is to replace the
transmission; Bennie had me talk to his transmission people and they said that
was the only way to go. Apparently when the coolant gets in the tranny it is
toast.

To all--thanks for the concern and suggestions. Will post any news.

> Hi Ernie: The transmission cooler is completely independent of the
engine cooling radiator. The tranny cooler is located in-line after
the engine coolant leave's the radiator. It looks like a large #9 can
located between the radiator and the engine. You can take this out
and replace it or have it cleaned if necessary. It's my understand
that using harsh cleaning chemicals, hard water, wrong ph. etc can
have a very harmful effect on this somewhat small transmission
cooler. I've heard the question asked several times at some of the
bluebird rally's " What don't we have the air to coolant heat
exchanger system like most car's and smaller truck have" their answer
is always that the water to tranny fluid heat exchanger is a lot more
efficent because of the large amount of heat our tanny's generate.
I'am thinking that on my next coolant change that I'll take the
tranny cooler off and give it a good inspection....Bob Cold in
