Alternators out
O.K. guys. Here's one for you to analyze.
Couple days ago I was driving and both voltage guages went to 16 volts and 150 amps showing. Stopped at rest area to verify. Ralph and I talking on the phone decided it sounded like a lost ground or the regulators didn't see batteries as fully charged. I checked the voltage on the batteries and they read a real 15.7 volts. No way to run very far with that going on, so we headed for a stop and it was late in the day. Nextmorning, Benny said 150 amps could be from only one alternator, so we took alternators off the system one at a time. One was dead and the other showed a little output, so we headed down the road with that one working. Within an hour, it quit with a fault light showing. After I took it out of the system, the fault light remained. I started generator and allowed the battery chargers to take the place of the alternators. I do not intend to remove either while on the trip and try to find a decent place for re-build. Will do that when I get home. Not sure if one regulator went bad and then took out the other. I only want to do this once. There could be something else in the charging circuit that is the problem. If you can shed any light on this, let the ideas fly. R.E.
