Yanmar generator oil pressure

Bob Loomas 1985 PT 36 I took a day-trip yesterday that had the generator running for about 16 hours straight. On my way home, the oil pressure gauge for the gen engine began reading very high, almost pegged to the right. While I know what low oil press can do to an engine, I have never really heard any talk of whether high oil pressure is a big problem. Is it? If it is a true problem and not an instrument issue, what is the likely cause? It may well be the gauge, when I turned the gen off, the press gauge only retreated about half way. I checked the oil before leaving yesterday and it was fine. Have not done any investigating yet this morning. The gen seemed to be running perfectly otherwise, the water temp was fine and there were no odd sounds, smells, etc. Ideas?
