mystery tank under galley sink

My 82 FC has a blue tank under the galley sink. It is about 6" in
diameter and about a foot high. It says it is for use as a water
softner tank, but i suspect it ts a whole bus water filter. It appears
to be OEM bluebird.. does anyone know what it is for, and if it should
be serviced?
