Speedometer
On the '84, there is a speed sensor on the rear of the brake drum,
curb side. They go bad, and are only around $35. On some '84s there is another one on the left brake drum, the cruise-control was separated for interference reasons. The speed sensor if original is likly to break when you attempt to free it from its rusty lock-nut. I had to replace the sensor on two of my FCs On the '78 mechanical one: I replaced the speedo on my '77, used a new electronic speedometer. You can buy the new Teleflex one if you want (matches), or go with a new VDO programmable, about $100 I believe. For a speed sensor I used a driveshaft pickup, four magnets on the front of the driveshaft and a pickup coil (easily) mounted above it. On another arrangement I used the '77 speedometer cable to drive a cruise-control AC signal generator, also easy to find at your local NAPA et al. If you go VDO, you can buy the matching programmable tachometer, forget about the problematic tach drive on the FC, and drive the tachometer from the alternator, a fairly simple modification. buy the tachometer with the hourmeter in it, memory tells me that the '78 didn't have an engine hourmeter. A Teleflex industrial/international tach with hourmeter used to be available to match also (as in the later FCs and PTs), not sure they're still available but it's what I used in my '77. - Jeff Miller --- In WanderlodgeForum@yahoogroups.com, "Gardner Yeaw" wrote: > > Dale, > My '78 has a mechanical spedometer.
