Checking transmission oil level

This I guess is one of those things a guy ought to know but I thought I
better check to make certain I have it right. To check the trans
level. Engine running and read the level as cold when first started
and the hot level after engine and transmission are warmed up? I
haven't had to check the trans levels on a vehicle in years but I
thought it might not be a bad idea on a vehicle of the age of this BB
