Don, That's good news about the diesel. Here at flying J regular unleaded is 2.27 and diesel is 2.50.

If you just use those two you actually have two cons for gas.

Historically, diesel has been cheaper than gas, a lot cheaper.

In recent history diesel had a spike that put it up dramatically relative to gas, but the reasons for that spike are being market-corrected steadily.

In the latest (8/31) DOE price numbers, on a national basis diesel was still a little (not a lot) more than gas, $2.674 vs $2.613. On the West Coast, where both are higher than national, diesel was 15 cents less than gas. Probably because the west coast has already amortized much of the cost of ULSD conversion ahead of the rest of the nation.

There is huge diesel refining capacity set to come online over the next few years as refineries convert to, or build for, hydrocracking instead of cracking. We will be back to much cheaper diesel (compared to gas) within 5 years, I think.
