A good test of your firewall and computer
settings can be run from Steve Gibsonâs site Shields UP! . You can
run several tests that will try and attack your computer and provide the
results and suggestions to fix the problems. This is where I find some
problems with AVG free. Itâs not that the software is bad but the
default configuration is weak.

A free program that I have found very useful is Malwarebytes . It doesnât replace
your virus scanner, but looks for âbadâ things that you have
inadvertently loaded when visiting sites. I support 30+ personal laptops
at my wifeâs C21 office and have had very good luck with it. I
personally scan our personal computers as part of our weekly maintenance-cleanup-backup
routine. I have even been able to recover laptops that would not boot
after being infected with one of those online scanner scams. It gets
updates almost daily. It is a program that you must manually update and
manually run. If you have serious problems boot your computer in safe
mode and then run it.
Â
Another very useful free program is Ccleaner . It will keep your
computer running better by cleaning up the clutter. It works especially
well if you run your defrag program after running ccleaner.
Â
What ever virus program you use update it daily and keep it
actively scanning. I have my preferences but I wonât even start
that argument. There are other programs that perform the functions of the
above programs but these have NEVER caused other problems.
Â
Because of my wifeâs business website we pay for a service
that blocks emails that are scams, phishing, or contain virus. For my
email account it blocks about 900 and passes about 70 a day. I
periodically down load a sample of the blocked emails to a test system and they
are indeed âloadedâ. There are a few members of this site
that get blocked often so keep your AV software current and your firewall
settings appropriate for where you are connected.

Good
comment about AVG-free edition, Mario. And, perhaps, I should have reworded my
comment to say that the AVG pay-for edition simply provides
"even more protection and some additional features." I have heard
from several other friends that AVG free-edition provides all they need. I
guess with all them 24/7 hackers out there (and my worry-wart tendency to feel
vulnerable to them), I tend to go for as many extras as I can, so in my
mind, I guess I'm buying a little extra peace-of-mind. But, in terms of not
interfering with your programs and OS, doesn't it seem that AVG-whatever-edition
seems sooo much better than the so-called "industry standards" that
the stores stock, Norton and McAffee?
