Transmission Trouble
Hi Oene, I am really sorry to hear of your transmission problem, coming from
one who has been there. You were indeed fortunate to be able to limp home, the BB is a sorry sight on the rear of a tow truck. Interesting, my 1985 PT-36 transmission went out 3 years ago at approximately 160k; when it occurred I assumed (wrong) that the old MT654CR would be relatively easy to find already rebuilt. Even Allison no longer offers a rebuilt or remanufactured unit. I ended up having mine rebuilt in Phoenix at no small cost but at least all is well now. One thing I would suggest is to negotiate the warranty. What I found out was that virtually all rebuilders offer a simple one-year warranty which in the case of a motorhome means absolutely noting. I was able to coax a 3-year warranty out of them to protect my $5000+ cost. Just a point of curiosity why pull the engine? It is not necessary for the transmission job. Regards and good luck! Neil Author, "The RVer's Ultimate Survival Guide" http://www.rvsafetyinfo.com author@... 1985 PT40 140,000 miles 6V92 w/MT654. On the way home from a small vacation I accelerated from a stop light wound up and slipped at the shift point into second. I say that did not feel right. Stopped at one more light before the e-way and this time accelerated a bitt more carefully, 1st slipp 2nd,3rd,4th and then no 5th at all. I pulled off on the shoulder and checked everything, all fine. So 80 miles from home, this is going to get expensive any way I look at it, so I limped home with the gear selctor in 4th, tranny temp. running at 205. I let things cool down and dropped the pan and found metal shavings in there. Looks like I have a good size project in front of me. Motor and tranny are coming out. I will let you all know what I find. I changed all fluids and filters before we left for New Orleans 5 months and 3,000 miles ago with no inicators at that time.
