Transmission Trouble
Hi Tom, definitively all I can tell you about the relative cost differential
is what was told to me by Allison and several rebuilders that I contacted.
They indicated that the 654cr is an entirely different animal in that it is
a 5 speed utilizing close ratio gear and was equipped with a retarder.
Thus, there are virtually none of these in the rebuilders pool resulting in
much higher prices. The $5000 that I spent did include replacing the torque
converter also something that is generally not quoted on initial contact.
The labor to exchange as I recall was near $1500 and amount which is
understandable when watching the process on the PT. Just enjoy your very
reasonable quote.

Regards,

Neil

I am curious as to why there is so much difference between rebuilding and
installing a MT654CR in a PT and a MT643 in a Forward Control. I am being
quoted approx $1100 for the tranny and $800 for the labor to change it out
a far cry from $5000. Is there that much difference in the labor involved?
