90WLSP36 Smoke and heat
The transmission retarder on our 88FC stopped working. Everything mechanical
outside the transmission housing checks out ok and fluid level is dead on book
@180 degrees. Previous owner said the only time it quit for him was when a
breather tube that supposedly hangs down in front of Left steer tire got
plugged. Can anyone tell me exactly where that rubber tube might be and where
it might originate on the transmission and if I'm looking in the right place
because I sure don't see it. ?

First, I would change the thermostat.
I think you have the Cat 3208TA, 300 HP.
My 300 HP had only one thermostat some older 3208's have two.
Stop at the Cat parts dept and they can print out a picture
of this area. It is not too difficult to change. If you decide to do
the repair yourself, I or this forum can give further details.
Could be injectors or more, you need to give more symptoms.
