Water Leaks!

Water Leaks!
Stephen
This might be a topic I can help on, ours is a rear bath but had the
same problem. Water was coming from behind the wall of the shower,
after taking the walls apart and trying to remove the small window
behind the shower, the glass company said no way to remove without
access from inside. We finnaly cut a hole in the wall above the
handles and below the shower head, easely found the broken pipe and
enough room to work on it. Covered the hole with a nice piece of
aluminum, and now if we have to get there again its easy. And my wife
thinks it looks OK that way, thats a releif after the look I got when
the saw came out and I told her there was no other way.

Water Leaks!
The number of people that have no concept of how to winterize an RV is
amazing. Some of these include RV dealers. When we bought our Bird,
it took a long time for me to figure out where the leak was. It was in
the domestic water heating coil in the Aqua Hot. this required
replacing the complete Aquahot unit, not an inexpensive task. If you
have an Aqua Hot or Hydro Hot, remember that the domestic water
heating coil in the tank must be blown out. It is not protected by
antifreeze like the solution that surrounds it.

Water Leaks!
Bruce if you have the coach as it was originally built you should
have a freeze protector (electric heater with blower) installed near
the water tank and another in the area of the kitchen sink. These are
thermostatically controlled and will keep the pipes from freezing.
The blue heat tape is further protection and is a resistance tape
that is controlled by a thermostat molded in at the end of the tape.

Water Leaks!
Yes Tom. I know about the freeze heaters and they are still there. However I
doubt that they are working as they were designed. They seemed to run a whole
lot more than they should when the ambient temperature was well above freezing.
Like many things in a 20+ year old Bird they just need attention and since I was
incapacitated for most of the last 4 or 5 years I am playing catch up.

I am familiar with the tape that has the thermostat in the end and I haven't
pulled one of the blue wires yet to check it, but am under the impression that
there was no mechanism at the end of the wire. I'll learn more when I can see
one that is intact.

Bruce -

The freeze heaters on my 83 had an adjustable thermostat on each of
them. Mine were set to kick on at about 35 degrees or so. Maybe
someone turned yours up higher if they are running at temps well above
freezing.

Water Leaks!
Thanks Mike. I will check it out, but I don't think so. I can see the one
under the sink and I believe it was set around 40 degrees. The one under the
bed I just haven't gotten around to yet. All in good time. Hopefully it won't
be something that I need right now. It's almost 60 degrees here now.

Bruce -

The freeze heaters on my 83 had an adjustable thermostat on each of
them. Mine were set to kick on at about 35 degrees or so. Maybe
someone turned yours up higher if they are running at temps well above
freezing.

However I doubt that they are working as they were designed. They
seemed to run a whole lot more than they should when the ambient
temperature was well above freezing. Like many things in a 20+ year
old Bird they just need attention and since I was incapacitated for
most of the last 4 or 5 years I am playing catch up.

haven't pulled one of the blue wires yet to check it, but am under the
impression that there was no mechanism at the end of the wire. I'll
learn more when I can see one that is intact.

Water Leaks!
You got that right. I think the one I bought for 1/2 inch was pushing $100.00.
But in the long run I figured that if it allowed me to do the work it would more
than pay for itself and if I can help someone else in our community then it is
even a better deal.

Water Leaks!
Pex makes a connector that works like copper tubing connector. No
ferrel needed. The pex connectors come in all configurations. elbows,
unions. I have used them for years. Cut tubing slide nut over tubing
push fitting into tubing screw nut till it is tight. Just to make
sure this would work, i heated water in tubing to 175 degrees and 100
psi no leaks and no failures. Did this right the water heater outlet
line. 6 years later no problems, and they work in cramped spaces, no
need for the long handle crimpers. Also much less costly.
