Klunking noise
I have auto slack adjusters also. It is a strange thing because the only time it happens on my bus is when I really stomp on it. Strange thing, it never happens when I let off. One would think if the front end had a problem it would happen both ways. When I get off the treadle after one of those panic stops nothing happens, no noise. Leads me to believe it is in the wheel where the brake clamps down. The front end does not seem to have any problems visually. Had it aligned, no problems. Gotta read Pappy's link.

Klunking noise
Its the roller that the shoe rotates on. the roller comes with the
spring kit. the roller probably has a flat spot on it . You can change the shoes without a spring kit so I guess you can just buy the spring kit $9.00 per side and replace the hardware. I keep an extra set of shoes on hand and have them relined at a place in RiversideCa called L&M Friction they wont let me leave the shop without spring kits. here is a link to a great tutorial pdf that does a wonderful job on
explaining every part of an airbrake system and has some fantastic diagrams. A 'must read' for Canadian Commercial driver a 'should read' for AirBrake CoachOwners. https://gov.ns.ca/snsmr/rmv/licence/pdf/...manual.pdf I cant find any written confirmation of my $9.00 brake roller KlunkFix (googeled more hits with clunk) but the most it will cost is $18.00 and time if you have the ability to pull a wheel, the drum will pull over the lugs. I think the roller and bushing are the issue and the cam may also have a flat spot? Thanks Greg, I have to have an state inspection done soon. I suspect
that I will need some brake work, certainly a time to address this klunk now that I have a lead as to what is causing it. Had the same noise on severe stops. Read some place that by fullly
depressing the Brake pedal while standing still once a day, would do the adjustment (if needed) and alleviate the klunking on subsequent stops. This has worked for me. noise, were too old for automatic slack adjusters. I am well aware that the newer birds have auto slack adjusters.
