Any chance your transmission is starting off in 2nd instead of 1st?

Hi, Just a thought. What you are describing sounds like a turbo waste gate issue. I would take it into a Detroit engine shop and have them diagnose the engine.

When it is first started, when cold, it does not sound as smooth as I thought it used to.....almost like it has a slight mis. Seems to smooth out once it is warm. Bought it used with 160,000 miles, it now has a bit over 200,000 miles. The fuel and air filters have been recently serviced, but I have no knowledge of any past maintenance history.....so I don't know if there are other issues that need to be looked at....ie: valve settings, fuel injectors, etc. Has anyone else had this issue, or have any ideas at what I may need to check to help resolve this problem? That is interesting that you mention the transmission....it is something I have suspicioned because that is how it seems when starting from a stop. Is there any way to verify this? Would pushing "1" guarantee that it is indeed in first gear? This has the allison 5 speed, not sure on the model, I think its something like a 745 or 755. The HT755 is a 5-speed, but has 6 apparent/effective gears in terms of rpm
changing. Interesting post Don. I remembered it as I fired mine up this weekend to go
fill up with propane. Normally, I don't pay much attention to where the shift points are, as long as they do shift, and I usually light foot it off the start until I get rolling. Anyway, as I turned a corner to get on IH-10 for a bit, I felt the 2nd gear lock up shift and remembering your post, I then floored it to merge in with traffic. My 3/4/5 shift results were very crisp and almost identical to yours in mpg (35/45/60) but my max rpms and rpm drop off point were both higher than yours. Not exactly sure what that implies, but it was interesting to make the comparison. Ahem, someone seems to have put the 'g' key right next to the 'h' key on my
keyboard, so my mpg should clearly have been mph in that post. UPDATE; Tech called today and said he found the number 6 injector is bad.
Basically it is running on 7 cylinders.
