Pricey repairs

Pricey repairs
Ron,

I think Jack has hydraulic brakes on his '71 FC. $3500 sounds steep
to me anyway! We paid about $250 to have the parking brake valve
replaced - the mechanic did have to trace down the lines, drain the
tanks and adjust the rear brakes also - sad scenario where a water
line had been plumbed into the back of the park brake valve (his
assistant traced that line and connected it to a spigot under the
batteries)...Sad We haven't found anyone willing/able to service the
air dryer - they want to install a new unit and say it will take
hours just to plumb the new connections...(copper vs. plastic, etc.)

Parts can be bad enough but it's the labor charges that really cost -
is there such a thing as a flat rate book for Blue Birds? (duh) Some
shops seem to charge a substantial markup on sublet work justifying
it by saying they lose about three percent to the credit card
companies!? It pays to scrutinize the repair invoice and ask about
any questionable charges.

I envy those who have the mechanical expertise, tools and equipment
to tackle major chassis repairs. My wonderful wife is willing and
able to tackle many repairs - she has crawled under the coach/into
the doghouse many times - heater valves, hydraulic lines, fuel
filters, accessory belts, etc. She's also gutted the roadside twin
bed to access the water tank/pump and lines. She was single for many
years and learned to do a lot to keep from being taken advantage of
by unscrupulous mechanics and repairmen.

Jim do you have air brakes on yours? And if so do you have an AD-2 air dryer?

Jim, Ron and the gang,

I hope y'all aren't forgetting that the formalized
alliance with Prevost Chassis (thru common parent,
Volvo Truck) opens their repair locations to Birds.
My experience with their work is they provide a
fixed maximum quotation to avoid financial
"surprises."

John, once again a great point! I forgot about that as well. Do you
have any idea where to find a list of the "certified" repair
facility??

FAX (904) 886-0092
Service - Doug Stolfo

Prevost Car Inc., TN
529 Hickory Hill Boulevard
Whites Creek, TN 37189
(877) 299-8881 or

Pricey repairs
Gee, either Bluebird's list is not complete/current
or I've been having the bulk of my "non-chassis" work
done for the last couple of years by an "unofficial"
location at 6391 Business Park Blvd in Jacksonville,
FL, (but not in North Jacksonville).
While I've not personally checked them out, I've
been told by BB owners, there are other locations in
Florida and other states, that they have used. I'll
try to get specifics...

We have had many folks bring their Bluebird to Prevost Car in Ft Worth. They
have been treated really well. Ernie-83pt40 in montana

Pricey repairs
Tom,

Yes, we have air brakes and to the best of my knowledge an AD-2 dryer.
I have visited the Bendix website and have downloaded the maintenance
and repair info.

John, Mike,

I had the Prevost Car info from the BB website, Fort Worth and
Jacksonville are a bit far to travel for brake service. I'll check the
location in Tennesee. I'm thinking of calling Central States Bus Sales
in suburban St. Louis, they are a Dealer for Blue Bird school buses
and specialty units - we've bought parts there before.

Pricey repairs
John then you can easily replace the cartridge in your AD-2 with a
rebuilt one. You can order it from NAPA . I have all of the part
numbers in the coach if you need them.

Tom,

Thanks for the reply and encouragement. I'll be looking into the air
dryer this weekend. Two of the three local NAPA stores have closed,
hopefullly the third is still around...
