Fuel Pump Leaks/Return lines/ FYI...
Hi All. I have been chasing a fuel leak on my 90 SP36. The lip seal
on
the Shut down shaft. Yesterday I finally figured out why. After shut
down the fuel pressure at the pump would spike and blow the seal
because my fuel return line was completely stopped up. Not flowing at
all. There is a return line that comes off the to of the pump down
the
side of the cat to a 90 degree fitting mounted beside the fuel
filter.
(this line was good) then out the other side of the 90 fitting there
is about a 2' rubber hose that runs over to the frame rail and ties
into the copper line that runs all the way to the tank. This rubber
hose and the 90 were stopped. When I went to get a hose made the shop
said that the hose was not FUEL RATED. That it was regular hyd. hose
and over time the fuel will break down the inside of the hose. I dont
know if this hose is original or not. But by looking at the out side
it looks 16 years old and the inside was completely broken down.
could
not even blow air through with shop compressor. Anybody with this
same
set up may want to take the time to check or replace it with a fuel
rated line. Cheap insurance and save alot of headaches. Tom 90 SP36

Thanks for that tip. I've had a leak in the incoming fuel line that
increases when the engine shuts off. I had the line replaced and it
held for a few thousand miles then started leaking again. I'll check
the fuel return line. I think mine is much shorter than 2'.
