Perkins cold start
What do you do if the rag is pulled into the intake?

Perkins cold start
Leroy if you have a retarder system dont consider turning it off
absolutely turn it off if you are travelling on roads that are
slippery and/or may have either ice or snow on them. There is a
caution in every manual to turn them off. Same with the cruise
control. Guess it would be scary to all of a sudden to have either of
them to engage when you least expect it.

I think that if you hire a tow truck and haul it South you won't
have any problems starting it up. Next year, leave sooner!

I agree. There is a warning placard on my pilots window stating turn it off. I
follow that warning, always. My intent was to provide a warning and let the
operator decide.

Perkins cold start
Pete, we are talking about small 3 4 cyl diesels of which I have more
than 15 working units. I crank while holding the rag only long
enough to start. I don't have the guts to use start fluid on a large
diesel. My 6cyl aircompressor (IR John Deere Diesel) requires
ether to start when its cold. I adopted a fool proof plan to protect
the unit. "We dont start it when its cold". When somthing gets sucked
in the intake it often hits a screen prior to the airfilter.

Perkins cold start
Greg use a spray can of WD40 it works fine for starting and you dont
have to cringe thinking the whole thing may blow up. Actually ether
is safe to if you follow the directions to the letter. Never spray
it unless the engine is turning over and then only in short bursts.

Bob,

Reminds me of mid-50s in North-Eastern Ark. It had been below zero for over
a week. We lived in the country and heated the house with Butane (not
Propane), above ground tank in the backyard. Butane would not gas with the
low temps so my father built an open fire along side the tank. Worked we
got gas in the house. Probably did not meet OSHA standards, but we were
cold!!!..

Mike,
Charcoal must be the modern way. First time I saw something
like this was a fellow stoking a hot fire of sticks under
a Cat dozer, though he had gone over the edge.

Few years ago I picked up a magnetic heater, sticks right
to the bottom of an oil pan, plug it into 120 extension
cord, worked great, I think I drove off and lost it.

I bought it in Washington State, was in my luggage to fly to
South Carolina. I just knew when the X-ray machine hit that
with plug, wiring, steel, the bomb squad would be called,
I don't believe my luggage was ever opened. Assurance???
