glow plugs + temperature gun ?

When I was trying to start my generator in the frozen Livingston, Mt- the
voltage would drop like a rock. Glad Tom suggested tying the batteries together
and after quite a few tries- she fired off, killing anything that was flying
in the vicinity of all the exhaust smoke. Ernie-83PT40 in texas

Can you get a basic clue as to weather or not the plugs are working by
holding the glow plug switch and having someone shoot them with a temp.

I've tried it. It does work but the block absorbs so much heat it is
hard to get a clear indication of working/not working. It is a rough
estimate but not ultimately reliable.

Easier to watch the generator battery voltmeter, it should drop
slightly when the stop button is held down, raise up when released.

Haven't tried to see if the temp gun would work and
I believe the answer previously given would be the
results, so much mass surrounding the glow plug.

What could be done however is to series the total glow
plug load with an ampmeter, full-scale maybe 50 Amps,
located near the genset. Then, with good glow plugs,
see what the current reading is on pre-heat, make a
mark on the guage of that reading. This is normal,
lower, glow plugs are not effective, higher, one has
shorted.
Hmmm, I might do this.

Guess you fella's know that hitting the glow plugs
then instead of hitting the starter, wait 15 seconds,
then pre-heat again, then the start, the diesel will
kick over quicker. Sometimes on other diesels I have
done this 3 times before hitting start.
