Howdy, Howard.
We replaced our Sharp microwave/convection oven with another Sharp,
model # R1870F. It was a job for 2 men, getting the original out and
the new one installed. After the new one was installed, there was a
one gap between the oven top and the cabinet. Jack put some black foam
in the gap and it looks ok, not really noticeable.

Howdy, Howard.
We replaced our Sharp microwave/convection oven with another Sharp,
model # R1870F. It was a job for 2 men, getting the original out and
the new one installed. After the new one was installed, there was a
one gap between the oven top and the cabinet. Jack put some black foam
in the gap and it looks ok, not really noticeable.

I need to replace the microwave in my coach, the original one finally
died after 24 years of use. Are there any special tricks for removing
the old one? Doesn't seem to be anything mounting it down, but I can't
get it to pull out. Also, anyone have a recommendation for a new
convection microwave that will fit? Someone on the forum mentioned in
an old post the Sharp R930AK that seems like the same height and width
as the original, but is it too deep?

Phil:

To start, remove the stove top cover, then remove the 12 vdc light, you
will have to cut the wires one at a time and tape over the ends as they
will be hot. The trim around the edges must be removed. Then remove the
screws that hold the stainless splash panels at the rear of the stove area.
The upper stainless cover should try to drop down with the trim removed.
Under each leg of the microwave are screws that hold it in place. Locate
the electrical cord and un plug it.

Now the old unit should be ready to slide out. You really need 2 people to
remove it from the cabinet, that puppy is heavy.

Measure the depth then check the specs on the 930AK.

I gotta phone number for a fixer guy. He replaced a couple of micro switches on
my OEM Sharp and it still works fine. There are a couple screws that attach the
oven to the base board, go in from the cook top side. Not bad to remove. If
you get it out you might want to have it checked by Bernie @ 262 613 0278. I
think it cost me 50 bucks for the minor fix I needed.

Phil:

I replaced the original Sharp in my '85 PT last month. Nearly all of
the currently available units are about 2 inches deeper than the
original, and they are different width x height requiring adding trim
around the face. The current model Sharp (R-930) is within a half
inch of the original in depth, identical in width, and about one inch
shorter. The others are often cheaper, but I chose the Sharp (R-930
AK...the black one) to avoid fitting problems.

My coach has Cruise-airs, and the duct for the kitchen zone runs over
the oven. This makes a tight fit, so that the heat from the oven
vents out the Cool-o-matic vent behind the cabinet face. Therefore no
additional reworking of the trim was needed, even though the new unit
leaves a gap at the top front.

Very little of the unit shows except for the door, so I found the
stainless steel unit's extra cost unnecessary. I purchased through my
local Lowe's by special order, at no extra cost. (Home Depot in my
area charges a $55 fee.)

One change of note: the new unit does not have screw-on feet. Rather
they are snapped-in and held in place by a pin vertically up through
each foot. I used long sheet metal screws up through the front feet
only, via the original front pair of holes in the oven surround. (The
original had been removed in 1998 according to a repair tag inside the
cover, and was held in only by screws in the front two feet and the
snugness of the cabinet. If I'd known that I wouldn't have had to
undo the light as Ralph wrote.)

Also the power cord on the 930 is shorter than the original, which
necessitated an additional short APPLIANCE extension cord. If yours
plugs in to the left of the unit, you may need one too.

Another suggestion is to use a digital camera to record the cabinet
disassembly process--there were a bazillion screws in different sizes
all over! I even had to take the trim loose around the cooktop to get
enough clearance along the wall.

Phil,
I replaced mine with the R930AK the depth was not a problem. It was not as tall
as the old one [maybe a inch and a half shorter] but the width was fine. I
ordered mine from www dot qualitymatters dot com 383.98 delivered. They will
show the measurements or go to the sharp website and check it.
I had mirrows attached to stainless around stove I had to remove them. There was
a bolt through frame into bottom of microwave I had to remove. Some trim pieces
around edges and a light at back of stove that had to come out, The stainless
frame around stove slid out. I'm sure there is something I am leaving out or
something different on you coach. I just started removing what was obvious them
I would see other things. There is a lot of detail work in a Wanderlodge or BMC.

I don't know about an 87, but in my 77FC35 there was a plywood layer in the cabinet over the microwave that had to be pulled up, revealing bolts that could be loosened from the microwave.  It was quite an adventure to find.

I replaced the Microwave/convection oven in our '85 FC.
It's a labor intensive chore that required the removal of all the stainless
steel around the oven. This removed you can see the rest of the screws to
complete the removal of the oven.
I posted some pictures of this project.
