I recently searched the Web for research on filter quality. There are many such
projects out there. Most reached the same conclusions about which filter makers are OK. Bottom line: Filters made by Wix are well made and consistently reliable. None of the Wix fiters were found to be unacceptable. In all cases, a better filter than Wix could be found, but usually at a much higher price. In general the high-end filters did not do a better job, but would keep doing the job longer. For folks who do frequent oil changes the high-priced filters seemed to offer little advantage over Wix-built filters. Napa and Carquest filters are the same filters as those sold under the Wix brand name. I did not learn who makes filters for Cat, DD, or Cummins - but the filters currently sold by Honda were reported to be junk. I'm just repeating what was said on the Web sites. For more detail, the information is easy to find on the Web. So, what brand don't you buy?

Donaldson is the OEM for a lot of filters. They're one of the major manufacturers.

As others have said,WIX(and NAPA), and Donaldson are the main good
ones. They are made by the same co. and the same quality. GM and Motorcraft also are good(remember DD is a GM product). If you want the bottom feeders, email me off line(To many lawyers out there). If you have my no. call, also. Steve Gureasko 90WBWL401/2 Jus Chillin Ponchatoula, La. |

The world of filters is dark and mysterious. Motocraft do not make any filters.
They are likely made by Champion labs ( not spark plugs) Champion makes a lot of OEM filters, even for GM. Cat makes their own filters and they are very high quality. Unfortunately they stopped making filters for the legacy engines ( 3208) and those appear to be Wix. Cummins Filtration ( Fleetguard) make some of the finest filters on the market. There is more to a filter than the media. The bypass valves and how they are mounted is important. Diesels tend to have higher oil pressures than gas engines so the thickness of the "can" and the way the can is attached to the flange is important. Some Cat filters have die cast flanges!! Way stronger than stamped sheet metal. Not every filter mfr. makes every filter in their catalog. Some of the less popular #'s will come from: Wix, Champion, Luberfiner and others. Just painted a different color! Donalson is often OEM for air filters on trucks and they also make the filter housings. There is one strict rule to follow: Do not abuse your power plant with a Fram filter!! JUNK Bruce 88 Wanderlodge |
