John,
Not a problem, probably my fault originally for posting a confusing statement. I don't keep my old messages for reference. For what it's worth, I really don't like gel batteries.... If we take it easy on the juice, I figure we can go three days before hitting the genset... My biggest problem is when I'm not pluged in. At the last Cat game I let the generator run for five hours with the engine heater on before I could get the engine to start and the temp was 40. I had the engine heater ck and they said it was ok. Did you head back to Texas. It's getting cold hear. Craig Hovda 90WBWL |

Hi Blair & John,
While I can't say too much bad about the East Penn Gel Cells in my '99 as they are still going strong at 6+ years old, I agree that AGM is a better technology. From what I read, they should give me more cycles and charge much faster which is a big benefit when charging from a generator. I'm sure that I'll be changing over when these Gel's finally die and will be looking to you for advice on which ones to get. I've already checked and the inverter/chargers and I can switch them from the "Gel" setting to an "AGM" setting so they should charge correctly. Rich D. volts. (Each pair of 6 volt are wired in series to give you 12 V, then the three pairs are wired in parallel to maintain the 12 V.) We just replaced all our batteries, and this is the way they are set up. They have no problem starting the 475hp DD. I used the Trojan T-105's, as they have had good recommendations for years in the RV community. With the batteries, all new cables, connectors, an isolator for the genset battery, and grinding off the 20 years of gunk and repainting the battery tray, it cost me a few bucks over $600. On the Newmar forums, a lot of people have good luck with Sam's Club's 6 volt batteries. They are cheaper than the T-105's too. Morning Rich!
First cup of coffee, darker than the back side of the moon, wetter than the bottom of a boat, and the baby coons are eating the cat food. Batteries. Don't care what type you have, low discharge makes for long life. If you pencil the numbers, adding a battery or two goes a long way to extending the life of the whole group if you up your minimum discharge point. I have a real good friend who lives on the upper peninsula that is an energy consultant for several really large corporations. He does energy audits and then makes changes in their entire operations for energy savings. He knows batteries better than anyone else I've ever met. Most of what I know comes from him. Take your battery bank. If you increase the number of batteries by 50% and raise the lowest voltage that you allow them to be discharged to you will easily double their life. Just going from 12.0 volts to 12.5volts just doubled their life. I have been cleaning my battery terminals and notice that on 2 of my 4
batteries, that the positive terminals are raised higher then the rest of the terminals. They look like they have been in some physical distress- but the cables are all of adequate length. Could this be an overcharge condition? These batteries are a little over 3 years old. Ernie-83 PT 40 in Texas- engine is getting hard to start, also |

Ernie are all of the batteries of the same manufacturer and type? Is
each battery physically secured with approved battery holddowns? If all of these are true then as long as they hold a good charge why worry about them? tom warner 1982 FC35 Vernon Center,NY At 07:47 PM 11/20/2005, you wrote: >I have been cleaning my battery terminals and notice that on 2 of my 4 >batteries, that the positive terminals are raised higher then the rest >of the terminals. These are all Delco 6 volt bought on the same day. Bluebird designed the
angle iron hold downs for these and basically they haven't moved in 3 years. Just wondering why the positive terminals are elevated on just 2 batteries. Ernie-83pt40 in texas [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

When I bought the PT from Blair, he warned me a couple times, that the batteries needed quick attention. When I was replacing them, I used a battery carrier that connects to the terminals. While I was carrying one of them, the top of the battery came off. Maybe you have a problem like this. Steve Harrie St. George, UT '86 PT38 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
