Starting Batteries
Hi All,

I haven't been able to be on the site much lately, but am also at the
point of replacing batteries. I have six Continentals that are about
three years old (group 27). They seem to have needed and excessive
amount of water and I have used distilled. My charger is a Xamtrex. The
setup is horrible. There are four on the bottom and a tray with the top
two a couple of inches above the four. To get to the lower batteries
the top tray has to be removed and all the bateries just about have to
come out to get to them, plus the terminals and battery tops are
usually filthy (lots of acid buildup on negative posts). It takes me a
good half day to take them all out and clean and water.

Should I got to Trojans, something maintanence free or what? Also, my
battery up front, I thought was for the generator, is not. It is just
an auxilary battery. You can completely disconnect it and start the
generator. However, you can tell it kicks in when you push the aux
switch. So, I guess I have several concerns. Thanks for any help.

Steve,

If you used filtered well water would that be ok, or as safe as distilled water.
Thanks,

When adding water remember to use disstilled water, not tap. Will
help them last. Speaking from the school of hard knocks, with a

The Trojan maintenance guide says "Use only distilled or deionized water".

At times during my years with Bell South I maintained strings of wet
cell batterys. The training we received advised not to use tap water
because the stuff that was in the water would settle in the bottom of
the case and would evenually cause it to short out. But hey these
cells were designed to last 50 years.

I recently installed 6 Trojan T105's in the rear of my '86 PT38. There
is plenty of room. Mine are all on one level though.

My genset can also be started with the front battery disconnected. I
added a battery disconnect near the main battery bank, so when dry
camping I can disconnect the front battery to prevent it from running
down. I also flip it when I disconnect the main battery bank when I
put the rig in storage, to prevent it from running down.

I can send you some pictures for ideas.....

Steve,

Thanks for the info. Sorry to be so long in getting back. If it is not too much
trouble some pictures might help. I don't think therte is any way I could get
six
Trogan batteries in.
