Stevee- my batteries had got hot. That is what the owner of the battery
distributor store said. I bought 4 new Trojan and new cables. Installed the
new
batteries, and the coach fires right up. Happy thanksgiving, Ernie-83pt40 in

Steve deep cycle batteries are far to heavy in my opinion to be
carried with terminal straps like you note. Most batteries now have
molded strap attachments at each end to wrap a flat strap thru for
pick up. I know my interstate batteries do.

I have a 90 WBWL and the manual said the batteries when new were six
12v and what I have now in the bus is six 6v batteries. Can't anybody
tell me what should be in there. I need to replace the batteries and
could use all the help I can get.

Graig, the batteries in my coach, are 6 12V types. All the ones
that I have seen are that, or more. If yours is truely 6 6V types, you
are probably way down on power and hard to start. Do you know what
size inverter you have?

Hi Craig,

I had a '90 WLWB and it came new with six 12VDC deep cycle batteries.
These were wired in parallel. There is no reason why you can't use
six, 6VDC batteries wired in a "series/parallel" fashion. Each group
of two, 6VDC batteries are wired in series to give 12VDC then the
three groups of two batteries are wired in parallel to combine them
and maintain the 12VDC. The choice should be made based on comparing
the amp-hour capacity of both setups and whether you want to change
the cables.

Hi Craig,
I am in the process of changing all of my batteries. I have 3 group 31
starting batteries with 925CCA each. These replaced 3 of the same size
but 750CCA each. Those are mainly for starting the DD 8V92.

I also had 7 12V deep cycle marine/rv batteries for the coach, holds
8. One went bad and have been using 6 until now. I'm replacing with 6
6V golf cart batteries wired for 12V. This will give me 675AH and now
are of a type of battery that can withstand the rigors of
charging/discharging better than the labeled "rv/marine deep cycle".

As you may know, these 2 banks, engine & coach, can be connected
together via a solenoid controlled by a switch on the dash. When
running down the road, the solenoid is automatically engaged to charge
both banks with the on-engine alternators. When you're dry camping the
switch should be off, leaving the coach batteries to power the
interior, etc. This will isolate the engine batteries and keep them
fresh for starting. When back home, I throw the switch to charge both
banks when plugged in.

In addition, I'm adding marine battery switches to completely
disconnect as an optioin. As we all know if you don't plug in or run
the genny, the coach will run the coach batteries down in a few days.
Engine batteries too if the switch is in the wrong position. I will be
able to power off everything and won't need to be plugged in.

Anyone,
It may be a simple case of batteries at the end of their useable life, but...
If my coach is not plugged in, my three 4-D starting batteries and 6 gel-cell
coach batteries drop to between 10.5 and 11.5 volts and I have to plug in or run
the generator for a few minutes just to get a start, even tying in the generator
batteri.
I thought I might have left one inverter on by mistake, but when plugged in,
they both switched over to charge and fully charged the batteries in a few
hours. The meter was pegged at +300 amps for some time.
I hope it's something stupid I'm doing rather than needing to buy a bunch of new
batteries.
Anyone have any experience with starting or gel-cell batteries from Costco? Brad

My coach was received with a set of 3 smaller engine batteries and 6
'house' batteries in the 4-D size. All were Deka brand AGMs.

After a few months -- and a somewhat less-than-pleasant stay in a
state park with no hook-up and a long 'quite time' ... I determined
that my AGM batteries had probably been mishandled.

One factor was that the (non-standard) Link 2000 R battery controller
had been reset to "factory default" sometime during the 6 months the
coach had been in various dealer's hands. Unfortunately, the factory
default is for flooded cell batteries and it was overcharging the
AGMs -- severely shortening their life.

Since the engine batteries seemed ok, (They're a common size 34 or 37
or some such), I ignored them, but replaced the 6 house batteries
with Fullriver 4-D size AGM. These are a deep cycle battery used in
the solar industry. I've reprogramed the Link 2000 R controller to be
aware that AGM batteries are in use and I note that the charge and
float voltages are lower -- 12.95 instead of 13.4 with the flooded
cell setting.

I also discovered the reason for the poor boondocking performance --
and unfortunately, the batteries are not at the heart of the problem
-- rather the home-type refrigerator draws so much power, that the
batteries can't support that load and other "normal" activities for a
very long time. (I'm exploring other power management techniques to
better "survive" in a boondock situation in the future.)
