Recomended Engine Oil
I use Mobil Del-Vac 15W-40W all the year around in both of the Cats. I had a
3208 NA 210 & a 3208 TA 300. It works good for me. I keep mine a Quart low on fill up. It seems to use the first quart quicker. You can get it at Wal-Marts Cheaper than most retail stations By the way it is good to sign your port with year of coach & where you are located. Delo 400 is a good motoroil no question about that,
http://www.chevron.com/products/prodserv...specs.shtm , but in my opinion Mobil Super 1300 , 15W-40 weight is better http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/P...er.as\ p . In the 15W-40 weight Mobil Super 1300 meets ALL of the latest Diesel engine specifications for the most demanding uses. And the good part is that it is available also at Walmarts for $6.58/gal. I use it in my Cat3208NA, Honda Odyssey, Jeep Cherokee, Bolens Diesel tractor. It feels more like a synthetic to the touch then a dino oil. Need to clarify. What you have said is only for the two stroke Detroits. The four stroke Detroits utilize 15W-40 quite well. Recomended Engine Oil
> Just don't be puttin' that multi-viscocity stuff in a Detriot.
While that's an unqualified statement common to, and often repeated on all the forums, it's not true unless qualified. For Series 60 DD engines, multigrade is *required*. According to the Detroit Diesel Publication 7SE270, Specification Guide to Lubricating Oil, Fuel and Filters Requirements: 2.1.5 MONOGRADE OILS Monograde oils, irrespective of API service category, should not be used in on-road applications in any DDC 4-stroke engines or in off-road applications in Series 40E, 50, 60, MBE 900 and MBE 4000 engines. For two stroke DD (92 series), monograde is recommended, but use of multigrade is also allowed per the following portion of the guide on page 2-4: 4. At ambient temperatures below freezing (32° F or 0° C), sufficient starter cranking speed may not be achieved to start the engine with SAE 40 grade oils. Where starting aids are not available or at very cold temperatures (0° F to -25° F or -18° C to -32° C) even if starting aids are available, the use of multigrade SAE 15W-40 or monograde lubricant SAE 30 will improve startability. These lubricants must possess a High Temperature â High Shear Rate Viscosity (measured by ASTM D 4741 or equivalent) of 3.70 cP minimum. These oils must be replaced with monograde SAE 40 lubricants as soon as ambient conditions permit. (This same info was also in the DD series 92 manuals in my blue box) Further on the section on synthetics, the guide states (somewhat ambiguously on the two strokes): 3.7 SYNTHETIC OILS Synthetic oils should be used in Detroit Diesel engines provided they are API licensed and meet the performance and chemical requirements outlined in this publication. The oil should be a PGOS 93K214 approved product for use in EGR equipped engines. For two-stroke cycle engines, only synthetic oils which do not contain viscosity improver additives may be used. My personal interpretation on synthetics: Since most diesel synthetics are multi weight (15W-40) and far exceed the typical chemical and physical properties of a lubricant meeting Detroit Diesel requirements in normal applications, as defined in their table 3-2, it appears that multigrade synthetics meeting the spec are approved for use in the two strokes. FWIW.....
