power problem on 88 pt 40

power problem on 88 pt 40
Is Roberts problem solved yet?

I just read the original post again. Has the coach had 120v on leg one all
along and no amps on leg 1 guage. If so, that is not necessarily unusual. That
depends on usage of 120v powered equipment tied to leg 1.

What specific items are not working? Are they 12v or 120v powered? Except for
the wall and TV outlets the electrical things (reading lights, overhead indirect
lights, rope lighting etc. ) in my coach are are 12v.

we have just returned to our bus and there is a problem with the power.
none of the electrical things seem to be working at the front of the
bus. the lights and electric heater work in the bathroom and the
battery charger and water heater are working. the gauge at the front of
the bus shows leg one amp at zero. I checked the breakers and they seem
normal. the lights at the shore power connector are normal. any ideas
where i should look? thank you

Leroy- it seems that he has power to the front gauges. If Kalispell wasn't so
far away from here I would take a trip to help him out. There is nothing like 2

When I read the post last night I thought Leg 1 (120v) was dead. Apparently
that was not the case. If electrical things not working are 12v the electrical
master may be off or failed, don't know how his is wired. My electrical master
shuts off all the monitor panels, the propane, and who knows what else. I put a
guard around that switch.

power problem on 88 pt 40
Good Morning,

Thank you everybody for your help and suggestions. Robert had a
meeting to go to, so I went thru the bus and checked what DOES and
DOES NOT work.

Almost all the switched lights do not work - the only one that works
is the vanity light in the bathroom. No others at all...no spots
(reading), no closet, none of the flourescents....The refridgerator
and lp detector do not work, but the u-line icemaker does. The
microwave and w/d both work. ALL electrical outlets seem to work per
test light or lamps plugged in. No water pump or lights on
information pannel. The only electric heat that seems to come on is
the one in the bathroom. The power drapes work. Both tv's and
vcr/dvd work. there seems to be not lights anywhere on the dash or
upper pannel area. The leg meters (leg 2 I believe) does seem to be
registering some usage.

Hopefully this will give someone a clue as to what may be going on.
We really appreciate your help!

I'm a newbie, but doesn't it sound like everybody can get completely off the
120V kick and concentrate entirely on 12V? Way back, someone mentioned the AT
switch, but I don't know if anyone has mentioned the main DC cutoff at the
batteries.

My coach has a 12v electrical master in the overhead above the pilot. Labeled
electrical master. See what position it is in. Yours may be located
elsewhere..
Mine shuts off at least the following items. Radio, equalizer, dash CD, water
pump, LP gas, spots, all monitor panels. etc.

Interesting. Mine, although the same year as yours, does not have an electrical
master over the pilot.

It does appear to be a 12v issue. Originally it appeared to be a dead leg 1.
The DC cutoff switch would prevent the batteries from charging and apparently
they are charging. I haven't checked to see if the A/T switch cuts all 12v
power but I have attempted to start the coach with it on and it will not start.
I'm going up tonight and I will see if that A/T switch does the same thing as
the 12v master. If for no other reason I'll know for future reference.

Differences in coaches is wide fer sure. I would be very surprised if you do
not have an electrical master somewhere.

I agree with Don that the problem looks like a 12V problem. Out of
curiosity, does the coach start? I doubt that the AT switch has any
bearing here as that just affects the start circuit as I recall. Like
Leroy's 90, my 91 has a 12V master switch in the front compartment
over the driver's dash. I don't remember when they started putting
those in. As I *recall* from my 1983 PT, (which did not have a 12V
master, except for the master kill switch under the dash) there was a
large solenoid behind the overhead dash panel that controlled the 12
power. If there is no 12V master switch, I would start looking for a
12V solenoid in the overheads with a loose connection, bad wire crimp,
or bad solenoid. Can someone with a 88 enlighten us as to whether
there is a 12V master switch?

Good luck.

Robert & Teri,
From the information that Teri sent I agree with the others, it's a 12V
problem.

A summary of things to check:
1) find the DC Master Switch and turn it on-off-on a few times. Our '87
has that switch under the drivers dash area. Be sure the wires are tight.

2) find the A/T Switch (Anti-Theft) and be sure it is set to OFF. Our
coach has that switch on the right side of the dash in front of the
driver.

3) check that the A/T switch (that may be a Bugler Alarm) outside the
entry door is set to OFF.

4) find the Electronic Master Switch and be sure it is set to ON. Our
coach has that switch in the upper cabinet above the glass door cabinet,
above the U-Line. There should be a fuse or circuit breaker somewhere
that works with the switch.

5) Mike Bulriss offered some good suggestions.

Good luck.
