Suburban Heater
Guys My friends 79 FC 33' has only one of the propane heaters working.
The other two will not come on when the thermostat calls for heat. They have
power going to them but the fan will not come on. What is the best way to
trouble shoot them? They ran this winter but when they were turned back on they
wouldn't come on or even try to. Thanks

Don,

I have Dyna-Trail NT12DC heaters in my 78FC.

The thermostat activates the fan relay directly. That in turn
supplies power to the module board via a sail switch (sail switch
detects the fan is running). You should hear the relay click when
the thermostat closes. If the fan doesn't run then either the relay,
thermostat, or fan has a problem. Try shorting the two blue wires at
the connector, that will eliminate the thermostat. One of the blue
wires is connected to +12 volts, the other to the fan relay. Check
that one of the blue wires has +12 volts.

If you hear the relay click when the thermostat is turned up or
the wires are shorted, the problem is likley the motor or wiring
from the relay to the motor.

In my '78 FC I completely disassembled one of the heaters,
several times, and finally got it working. In my case the fan would
run. As long as the thermostat is closing the circuit, the fan
should run. When I took the motor apart I found that the brushes
were close to being worn out. I managed to salvage slightly better
brushes from an old heater (One of mine is new). I have been unable
to locate a source for brushes and from all I can find, the motors
are no longer available.

Another thing I found was that the slits in the burner were nearly
rusted over so the output was minimal when did work. I pulled the
burner out and used a hacksaw blade to clean out the rust and it
made a world of difference. I didn't change the size of the slits, I
just cleaned them out.
